How the signs are determined

The Western sun sign comes purely from the month and day of birth. Each of the twelve signs covers a fixed range of dates — Aries from 21 March, Taurus from 20 April, and so on — and Capricorn straddles the year boundary from 22 December to 19 January. The calculator simply finds which range your birth date falls into.

The Chinese zodiac is based on the birth year. The twelve animals repeat on a 12-year cycle, and a separate cycle of five elements (each lasting two years) combines with the animal to give a full sign such as "Water Tiger". Together the animal and element repeat only every 60 years.

What the signs traditionally mean

In Western astrology the sun sign is associated with broad personality themes, and the four element groups — fire, earth, air and water — are said to share temperaments. In Chinese tradition each animal carries its own folklore and supposed traits, coloured further by its element.

These associations are cultural and symbolic. They are a fun lens for reflection and conversation rather than a tested description of anyone’s character.

Caveats with dates

A couple of edge cases are worth knowing:

  • If you were born on the boundary day of a sign, the exact cutoff can vary by a day from year to year in stricter astrological systems; this tool uses common fixed dates.
  • The Chinese animal here follows the Gregorian year, but the actual Chinese New Year falls in late January or February — so births before the New Year may show the next year’s animal rather than the previous one.
  • For ceremonial or precise astrological work, confirm against a source that accounts for the exact lunar date and time of birth.
  • This calculator is for entertainment and cultural interest, not prediction.

Frequently asked questions
