From steps to calories

A step count on its own does not say how much energy you used, because the work done depends on how far each step carries you and how much body you are moving. This calculator estimates your stride length from your height, multiplies it by your step count to get distance, then scales calories from that distance and your body weight.

Heavier people and taller people with longer strides burn more for the same number of steps, which is why both height and weight are part of the estimate.

Putting step goals in context

The familiar 10,000-step target began as a marketing figure rather than a medical one, but research does link higher daily step counts with better health outcomes. The benefit rises steadily and then levels off, so there is no single magic number.

  • Even moving from very low counts to around 4,000 to 5,000 steps a day shows measurable benefit.
  • Roughly 7,000 to 8,000 steps daily is associated with much of the health gain for most adults.
  • Walking faster raises the calories burned per step beyond this simple estimate.
  • Consistency across the week matters more than hitting a big total on one day.

How accurate is the estimate

The figures are deliberately simple and assume an average, steady walk. Walking speed, hills, carrying loads, and your individual efficiency all change the true calorie cost. Pedometers and phones also miscount steps, especially at slow speeds.

For a more personal result, measure your own stride length over a known distance and treat the calorie figure as a ballpark rather than a precise total.

A note on health

Walking is one of the safest forms of exercise, but this tool is for general guidance, not a medical plan. If you are starting to exercise after a long break or have a heart or joint condition, check with a doctor about a sensible activity level.

Formula

stride(m) = height(cm) × 0.415 / 100; calories = steps × stride × weight(kg) × 0.00057

Frequently asked questions

How is stride length worked out?
Stride is estimated as roughly 41.5% of your height. Measuring your own stride and adjusting will give a more personalised result.
