How the profit is worked out

The calculator first finds your total cost — the buy price multiplied by the number of coins — and your total proceeds, the sell price times the same quantity. Profit is simply proceeds minus cost, with any trading fees subtracted at the end.

Return on investment (ROI) restates that profit as a percentage of what you originally put in. Expressing the result this way lets you compare trades of very different sizes on equal footing: a $500 gain on a $1,000 position is far stronger than the same gain on a $50,000 one.

Reading the result

A positive figure is a net gain after fees; a negative one is a loss. Fees matter more than they look — on a small move they can erase what would otherwise be a profit, which is why they are deducted before the headline number is shown.

The bar chart sets total cost beside total proceeds so you can see at a glance how far the trade moved in your favour, or against you. When the proceeds bar is shorter than the cost bar, the trade lost money before fees are even considered.

Tips and common mistakes

A few things keep the result honest:

  • Enter every fee — exchange commissions, network or gas fees, and spread costs all reduce real profit.
  • Use the same quantity for buy and sell; partial sales need their own calculation.
  • Remember the figure is in nominal terms and ignores how long you held the position.

Caveats

Crypto markets are volatile and this tool only measures a single completed trade — it is not a forecast or investment advice. It does not account for taxes on gains, which can be significant and vary by country. Treat the output as a record of what happened and consult a qualified professional before acting on it.

Formula

profit = (sellPrice − buyPrice)·qty − fees; ROI = profit / (buyPrice·qty) · 100
